Why the XJ Ultimate is a safer, stronger, more agile and sustainable vehicle.
Because XJ Ultimate is built of aluminium and magnesium it is exceptionally rigid. As a result, the car is likely to suffer less damage than a conventional steel car in an accident and its occupants will have more protection.
AIRBAGS AND SAFE SEATING
As well as two front airbags, XJ Ultimate has airbags in the outer edges of the seats, together with side curtain airbags that drop down from above the windows to protect occupants in both the front and rear seats. Sensors detect the size and weight of the driver and passenger before the front airbags are inflated to help prevent injury. At the same time, the seatbelts feature “soft landing” technology, which softens the contact with the airbag. A further safety measure in the seating is the anti-whiplash technology which moves the head restraints forward if there is an accident.
XJ Ultimate anti-lock brakes vary brake pressure to ensure that the wheels do not lock and the driver can keep control during an emergency stop. Additional brake force is produced by Emergency Brake Assist, allowing for shorter stopping distances and improved steering control. Advanced Emergency Brake Assist primes the brakes if the radar within the Adaptive Cruise Control senses an imminent collision.
PEDESTRIAN CONTACT SENSING SYSTEM™
XJ Ultimate utilises a sensing system that will raise the bonnet slightly if it detects contact with a pedestrian. This helps to ensure that their head does not hit the hard parts of the engine and may significantly reduce injury.
ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL
When the Adaptive Cruise Control is on, a microwave radar in the front bumper monitors the vehicle in front and, if it slows, the system automatically slows XJ Ultimate to maintain a constant distance. Once the road clears it will take the car back up to the pre-set speed. The radar also operates the Forward Alert, giving the driver an audible warning if traffic ahead slows quickly or another vehicle moves into the same lane.
XJ Ultimate’s Lightweight aluminium body construction is at the very core of Jaguar’s focus on environmental responsibility. It achieves better fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions both in driving and in manufacture.
Using recycled aluminium in up to 50 percent of its body saves huge amounts of energy and significantly reduces emissions during the manufacturing process.
XJ Ultimate’s Fusion Alloy comprises a layer of ultra-high strength aluminium sandwiched between two thin layers of sheet aluminium. This reduces panel weight for better fuel economy.
The body structure uses state-of-the-art aerospace construction techniques of bonding and riveting. This reduces weight without compromising strength and improves performance.
Its aluminium body makes XJ Ultimate extremely light. Less weight means less mass to accelerate, providing outstanding performance, economy and reduction in emissions. Its architecture also makes it the stiffest in its class so the suspension can deliver ride and comfort with responsive handling.
