F-TYPE DRIVING DYNAMICS
F-TYPE is brought to life through the power of its engines combined with Jaguar’s advanced dynamic performance technologies. Together they produce a uniquely connected driving experience.
At the beating heart of every F-TYPE is a powerful supercharged engine: 3.0 V6 340PS in F-TYPE, 3.0 V6 380PS in F-TYPE S or 5.0 V8 550PS in F-TYPE R. All feature a Roots-type twin vortex supercharger mounted in the 'V' of the engine to preserve its compact dimensions. Jaguar is a leader in the field of supercharged induction technology. Supercharging provides a linear delivery of performance, and instant access to high levels of torque at all engine speeds, minimising the gap between the driver’s demand for power and the engine’s response.
ALL WHEEL DRIVE
The All Wheel Drive system on F-TYPE S AWD and F-TYPE R AWD offers performance with perfect poise, delivering outstanding, confident handling in any conditions. Available with Quickshift automatic transmissions, AWD works with Jaguar’s Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD) to constantly analyse the needs of all four wheels independently. It decides exactly where to deliver power to optimise traction and stability at all times.
IDD senses impending understeer or oversteer situations, where either front or rear wheels start to loose traction during rapid cornering, and swiftly deploys more power to the other wheels in proportion to the level of traction they can achieve, maximising control in the most demanding conditions.
CHASSIS & SUSPENSION
F-TYPE’s aluminium body creates an immensely stable platform from which the all-round forged aluminium double wishbone suspension can control the car. With the damping set-up optimised for the best partnership between dynamics and refinement, it gives the perfect combination of control, agility and feedback. On F-TYPE S and F-TYPE R models, Adaptive Damping assesses body motion and pitch rates 100 times per second, and adjusts the settings for each damper accordingly.
The system enhances control, handling and agility as well as the ability to rapidly detect and react to critical driving conditions and driver demands. It achieves this with a series of sensors that are placed around the car to monitor the body’s vertical movement, pitch and roll rates. The steering wheel position is measured 500 times a second enabling the system to predict body roll. The stiffness of each individual damper is then adjusted to help maintain body control, stability and agility.
CARBON CERAMIC BRAKES
Derived from motorsport technology, the optional Carbon Ceramic Braking system is the most powerfully performing braking system ever fitted to a Jaguar road car. Instantly recognisable with striking yellow calipers and offering up to a 21kg weight saving, it further reduces unsprung mass with corresponding benefits to both ride and handling. The system features monobloc calipers with 6 pistons at the front and 4 pistons at the rear.
Providing greater resistance to fade and wear, as well as delivering high levels of sustained performance in even the most demanding conditions, the Carbon Ceramic Braking system was track tested over hundreds of hours at long and short course race circuits across Europe. These included the Nürburgring, Rockingham in the UK and Fiorano in northern Italy, which are all recognised as taking an extraordinary toll on brake components: temperatures on the Carbon Ceramic discs reached between 600 and 900 degrees centigrade during fast lap driving. The Carbon Ceramic Braking System is available only with 20" Storm wheels.
Torque Vectoring technology enhances cornering and performance capabilities. A standard feature for F-TYPE R, it is also available for F-TYPE S and F-TYPE.
Torque Vectoring by Braking intelligently improves cornering control by applying finely metered braking forces individually to the inside wheels as necessary. It helps to turn F-TYPE into corners more precisely. Using F-TYPE’s array of electronic sensors, the Torque Vectoring system can sense impending understeer. It then applies subtle and precise braking forces to the inner rear wheel, and feeds more torque to the outer rear wheel; finely adjusting the car’s trajectory for optimal handling.
On F-TYPE R, the Torque Vectoring by Braking system works together with its Electronic Active Differential system, complementing each other to optimise traction and cornering ability as well as maximising steering feel and agility.
On automatic models, Adaptive Dynamics instinctively modifies the car’s response to conditions and your driving style. It analyses acceleration and braking, cornering, throttle and brake pedal activity, as well as road load and kick down activation. Sophisticated adaptive software then selects an appropriate gearshift strategy.
1. Upshifts inhibited by fast throttle off.
2. Spontaneous Vehicle Deceleration rapidly selects lower gears under heavy braking. Front dampers stiffen to help keep body level.
3. Corner recognition holds the gear through the bend to maintain stability. Outboard dampers stiffen to reduce body roll.
4. Gearshift strategy adapts to deliver rapid acceleration. Rear dampers stiffen to help keep car level through heavy acceleration.
QUICK RESPONSE STEERING
F-TYPE’s responsive steering is designed to provide the most direct connection between your hands on the wheel and the road. Its quick steering rack delivers precise reaction to driver input.
F-TYPE S features a Limited Slip Differential for improved traction and agility during acceleration out of corners as well as on slippery surfaces. The car can also make better use of the available traction before the DSC system needs to intervene, which results in more refined stability control during dynamic driving.
An Electronic Active Differential on F-TYPE R forms part of the Torque Vectoring technology which helps provide outstanding agility and control. Working in conjunction with the stability, traction and ABS systems, the Electronic Active Differential uses an electric motor acting on a multi-plate clutch to manage the delivery of torque to each of the rear wheels. Full electronic control of the rear differential lock enables the system to apply full locking torque almost instantaneously. The Electronic Active Differential allows for very fine control of the power delivery to limit wheelspin, maximise traction and offer even greater levels of control.
THE SOUNDTRACK OF A SPORTS CAR
F-TYPE's Active Sports Exhaust delivers a crisp note from start up, with the promise building to a race-car inspired crescendo at high rpm and during overrun. The system features active bypass valves which open during performance driving to allow exhaust gases to exit more directly for a deep, dramatic sound.
A Switchable Active Exhaust is available, allowing manual control of the system for even greater driver involvement. This is optional on F-TYPE and F-TYPE S models and standard on F-TYPE R.
