MORE DATA, MORE OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY
Just as technology allows us to bring new ideas to life, it also allows us to test those ideas in a more sustainable way.
Does our design deliver in practice? Have we met our weight and cost targets? Do all the components fit correctly? These are some of the many questions that need to be answered throughout the development process. Traditionally, these questions are addressed by building and testing a large number of prototypes.
At Jaguar, we’ve found a new way of doing things. Advances in virtual simulation mean that we can address more of these production issues with digital, rather than physical, prototypes.
As well as allowing test data to be analysed by all the product development teams simultaneously, virtual prototypes have many environmental benefits.
A recent model development saw Jaguar building 93% fewer physical prototypes than the previous model programme – meaning significant savings in resources, waste, power and fuel. These efficiencies have contributed to a reduction in material costs for the Whitley Prototype Stores of almost 50% between 2002 and 2003.
