INSTINCTIVE ALL WHEEL DRIVETM
All WHEEL DRIVE: POWERED BY JAGUAR's 3.0 V6 SUPERCHARGED ENGINE
The XF All Wheel Drive system is powered by Jaguar’s new all-aluminum 3.0 V6 Supercharged engine to deliver both refinement and performance with 340 HP at 6500 rpm. 332 lb-ft. peak torque is produced from 3500-5000rpm, while 295 lb-ft. is available from just over 2000 rpm for superb low down pulling power. The engine is complemented with the Jaguar-tuned ZF 8-speed automatic transmission which is optimized for economy and emissions.
UNCOMPROMISED JAGUAR PERFORMANCE
Whatever the conditions XF’s All Wheel Drive System never compromises the sheer pleasure of driving a Jaguar. There is little penalty in terms of ride quality, agility, or driver enjoyment, with the same involving handling as any XF rear wheel drive model.
In dry road conditions, the All Wheel Drive system preserves the acclaimed dynamic qualities of rear wheel drive models by prioritizing power delivery to the rear wheels. The exception to this is on pull-away from rest, when the car will always supply some torque to the front wheels to ensure smooth, fuss-free and consistent initial acceleration.
The system allows the car to offer All Wheel Drive security seamlessly while retaining dynamic rear wheel drive handling characteristics. Jaguar Instinctive All Wheel Drive™ – all wheel drive but still all Jaguar.
All Wheel Drive ensures a surefooted pull away from a standstill as the system anticipates demand by pre-emptively sending torque to the front axle. More torque at the front wheels helps the driver maintain control during quick acceleration.
Transitioning from a wet to a dry surface, the front to rear torque distribution is adjusted automatically, with rear wheel bias, as the system continually monitors road conditions.
During high speed turns in less than ideal conditions the system reacts instinctively, with no adjustments required by the driver, to keep powering through the turn. If low traction is detected at the rear wheels, torque is quickly redistributed to help maintain connection with the road.
While accelerating up a gradient the Instinctive All Wheel Drive™ system enables smooth acceleration even if the road surface is compromised.
ADAPTABLE TO SUIT THE CONDITIONS
Normal, Winter and Dynamic. All Wheel Drive can be switched between these 3 modes by the driver to suit the prevailing conditions.
Normal Mode is XF’s default setting on start-up while the other modes require driver selection.
Preloads torque on the front wheels from 0 to 10 km/h to ensure safe “pull-away”. Above this speed the All Wheel Drive system senses driver inputs, vehicle speed, steering angle and braking to maximize traction and driver control. Most importantly, the system is tuned with a rear-wheel bias, so signature Jaguar performance and handling isn’t compromised. In other words, it’s all-wheel drive, but still all Jaguar.
The All Wheel Drive system will function as it does in Normal Mode. However, steering and throttle responses are sharpened and adaptive dampers are stiffened (where fitted).
The closest to a fixed All Wheel Drive system and optimized for low grip conditions, with strong preload torque to front wheels, Winter Mode defaults to 30:70 front-to-rear torque distribution when no wheel slip is detected. This mode should be selected in severe conditions.
To develop and test XF’s All Wheel Drive system engineers used a dedicated Jaguar Land Rover facility on the edge of the Arctic Circle. Average winter temperatures never rise above freezing, making it the ideal location to test the extreme operating conditions.
Jaguar’s engineers spent 18 months testing the system in a variety of conditions, from deep midwinter snow to spring thaw. During the All Wheel Drive testing, temperatures plunged to -38° celsius.
